Hole in the Ice Reunion 2009

Hole-In-The-Ice Reunion Weekend

an alternative to H5's Hole-In-The-Ice 2009
27.-28. February - 1. March 2009

The Helsinki Hash House Harriettes & Harriers have unfortunately decided again not to hold their annual Hole-In-The-Ice H3 weekend in 2009.
Not to be daunted, a couple of us HITI veterans have gotten together to put on an event in HELsinki to soothe your loss. It may not be as extensive as the series that the H5 has presented us with in the past, but we're still intent on having a wild time in the land of reindeer and Santa Claus.
What exactly are we offering to do for you?
  • A central focal point, ie. where you can book accommodation
  • A Friday night pub crawl
  • A Saturday hash somewhere within the reach of the HELsinki public transport system
  • Refreshments and ad-hoc circle
  • 2 hours sauna
  • A hole in the ice (if there is ice, which could well be as we'll be at a lake for the 2009 event)
  • Saturday dinner reservation (set meal)
  • A Sunday hangover hash
  • Some sort of souvenir garment
What we cannot offer:
  • Assistance booking accommodation
  • Private transport (public transport will be needed)
  • Any sort of discount (pay-as-you-go)
All expenses will be pay-as-you-go. There will be no advance payment or registration fee, however the expenses for a few fixed costs (sauna, Saturday dinner, rental vehicle, refreshments, haberdashery) will be collected from each individual on Saturday prior to the meal.
If you'd like to be part of the ever-growing number of participants in this event, please contact em("r5tzu.hiti.harrier.ch","","r5tzu.contact") This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and watch this site for further details.

Proposed program

Friday, 27. February 2009:
  • 19:00 Meet Sports Academy Bar (see map below if you don't know where that is by now.)
  • 20:00 Pub crawl (DIY food at some time during the crawl)
Saturday, 28. February 2009:
  • 10:00 Meet at the Sports Academy Bar for the main event (we will take public transport from there to the start of the run.)
  • 15:15 Circle within the vicinity of the sauna
  • 16:00 Invade sauna
  • 18:30 Vacate sauna
  • 18:45 Invade restaurant (adjacent to sauna)
Sunday, 1. March 2009:
  • 03:00 Somehow get back into town
  • 12:00 Meet at Sports Academy Bar for hangover run
  • 13:45 Circle
  • 15:00 Late lunch for anyone who is still around
(This schedule will probably be blatantly ignored, but at least we tried to make one.)
Please bring everything you reckon you'll need for the rest of Saturday to the run. We'll take care of it for you.
Have you missed us and are trying to track us down on the day? Give us a call [once we find out where.....]

Sauna

See You Next Tuesday has located and reserved a sauna that will hopefully be suitable for our needs: the Green Window in Nuuksio National Park. Complete with HOLE! We will have 2.5 hours on Saturday following the run for EUR 195 total, to be covered by the participants. This is a 16-person sauna, that we will have for ourselves. Towels are included in the rental fee. We WILL be allowed to bring our own drinks and food into the sauna. (NOTE: Sauna on Saturday only!)
The complex that is providing the sauna has also been selected as the venue for our post-sauna entertainment/ repast. We have reserved a limited number of places until 03:00 (we'll get back to town somehow.....) A set meal will be pre-ordered and served after the sauna. Payment for anything else consumed will be on an individual basis.

Cost

Generally this event is pay-as-you-go (public transport, drinks, food (excluding Saturday dinner), accommodation) but of necessity there will be a few fixed costs (sauna, Saturday dinner, rental vehicle, hash consumables, haberdashery, etc.) that will have to be distributed among the participants. This will be collected on Saturday and should not exceed EUR 45.

Remember

The Finnair bus is the default option of connecting HELsiniki city center and the airport, but it costs twice as much and is only marginally quicker than local bus 615. They have the same end points - the airport (lentoasema) and the main train station (rautatientori). The stops at the airport end are a few meters apart and at the city end on opposite sides of the train station. Print out the schedule just in case you have a bit of nerve to give it a try.
Things to bring to the Saturday run: money to pay for the hashes and sauna, transport, and the evenings repast (drinks and food); foot protection (socks, sandals) for the walk to and from the Hole; suitable clothing for the post-sauna festivity. Towels are included in the sauna rental.

Accommodation

Apparently the Eurohostel is booked out already for this weekend. (Well, at least Saturday appears to be.) At this point we really have no recommended alternative, however googling for "helsinki hostel" turns up three alternate possibilities.
